Basic Spokesperson Skills

Develop proficiency with the most common types of interview settings. Learn how to work with media representatives to make the most of your time in the spotlight.

Interplay’s Basic Spokesperson Skills seminar helps new spokespeople to prepare for media interviews, and deliver them with confidence.

This seminar includes topics such as:

  • Understanding the media’s role and motivations

  • Negotiating favourable terms for interviews

  • Defining key messages

  • Preparing question-and-answer scenarios

  • Rehearsing techniques

Participants also learn about:

  • Appropriate demeanour

  • Bridging and blocking techniques

  • The need to avoid jargon

  • Techniques for answering a variety of question types

  • Post-interview follow-up

The Basic Spokesperson Skills course also includes a strong practical component, including unrehearsed interviews, development of key messages, rehearsals, stand-up interviews, telephone interviews and double-ender interviews. We record all interviews and review them with participants, enabling participants to see what's working well and what needs improvement.

We also offer each participant a free one-hour follow-up consultation by phone, so that our training remains relevant when the participant faces her or his first real media interview.
